Super/Natural: Home Truths & Participatory Practice, by Matt WhiteResidency commission from the Arts & Minds Consortium: a strategic partnership between Tai Calon Community Housing, Head4Arts and Aneurin Leisure. The recent inclusion of Assemble with local residents of the Granby Four Streets in the Turner prize shortlist demonstrates that there is a growing institutional and public appetite for challenging and rigorous, as well as inclusive, participatory practice projects within the contemporary Art landscape. Using examples of previous work within this context, Matt attempted to establish a ground for meaningful interventions and collaborations with residents from the Newtown housing estate as well as staff from the organisation that houses them.Matt White is an artist and lecturer specialising in lens-based media, which has been at the heart of his practice for twenty years. He devises working processes that explore how personal and moral conflicts are sited within a wider socio-political landscape. His most recent project revolves around the concept of ‘alter ego’, collecting data drawn from inhabiting the multi-faceted persona of a professional actor. White is currently a senior lecturer in Photographic Art at USW, co-founder of the Bristol based discussion group, Format and Programme Leader for the Moving Image at the Open College of the Arts.
