This chapter explains the major reasons for considering the increase in the radio access network (RAN) energy consumption. In the cloud-RAN, various functions that are presently executed in the base station are shifted to a remote data center where they are implemented via software. The chapter presents a comprehensive discussion on energy efficiency (EE) metric measurement. It considers the green design for energy crunch prevention in the fifth generation (5G) networks. The chapter comprehensively discusses schemes, such as hardware solutions, resource allocation, network planning and deployment, and energy harvesting and transfer, that can be employed to improve the EE of the 5G and beyond-5G networks. It also discusses fiber based energy efficient networks. The chapter analyzes system and power consumption models in which remote unit-based power consumption, centralized unit based power consumption, fronthaul power consumption, and massive MIMO energy efficiency are considered. It also presents obtained simulation results and comprehensive discussions.
